From the desk of a planner using CAD software, a public square is a balanced equation of “seating units” and “pedestrian flow.” But the map is a lie, and it’s a lie we tell ourselves because the alternative-the messy, friction-filled reality of the ground-is too exhausting to model.

Maps are fantasies of control. They represent what we want the world to be: static, obedient, and symmetrical. But the world is fluid, governed by gravity, wind, and the unpredictable habits of people who are usually in a hurry. When a planner looks at a blueprint, they see a “Bonn” bench as a coordinate. When the man with the broom arrives at , he sees a debris trap.

The Gap Between Intention and Actuality

I say this as a safety compliance auditor.
